Women & the Wind

Women & the Wind

Three women ignite flames of curiosity and adventure by deepening our understanding of the synergy between nature and humanity through a voyage following plastic across the North Atlantic on Mara Noka, a 50-year-old wooden catamaran. After a year rebuilding the boat and weeks waiting for wind, they set sail from North Carolina. For Kiana, an experienced sailor, the ocean was familiar; for Lærke and Alizé, it was a first crossing. They encountered calms littered with plastic, violent storms, torn sails, seasickness, and endless days of grey skies. Yet through hardship came unity with each other, the boat, and the ocean. As the sun returned, so did laughter, reflection, and a profound sense of connection. After 30 days at sea, reaching the Azores was bittersweet: land meant the voyage was ending, but it also reinforced their mission to share the ocean’s power and fragility, and inspire awareness of our impact on it.
