Alfonsina Strada The Rebel
Alfonsina Strada was born at the end of the 19th century, at a time when women had very limited opportunities. Despite this, her determination and passion for cycling enabled her to participate in the men's Giro d'Italia in 1924, and she remains the only woman to have taken part to this day. She was a true pioneer of women's cycling, carving out a place for herself in a sport that was only recognized for men and establishing herself as a true athlete. Women's cycling owes a great deal to her, as she was a watershed figure for the movement, both then and now. Although highly regarded by male cyclists such as Girardengo, little remains of her except a few newspaper articles and photos. There are no images or interviews of her competing. This documentary is intended as a tribute to her, to the girl who made cycling her reason for living, but who was too far ahead of her time for an era that failed to recognized her achievements.
