As the Water Flows / Au Fil de l’Eau

Ghana, a magnificent country in West Africa, is a land of contrasts, where every stream whispers a story. Here, water shapes both landscapes and lives: it carries surfers through the waves, nourishes the land through rivers, and absorbs the world’s excesses into the ocean. Yet while it is a source of life, it also lies at the heart of deep environmental and social crises. The documentary explores these water-related challenges through three interconnected lenses: textile pollution and its impact on the ocean, freshwater contamination caused by illegal gold mining, and inclusion in surf culture — where the sea becomes a space of freedom and empowerment for women and local communities. From beaches overflowing with secondhand clothes, to rivers poisoned by mercury, to the waves of Busua where Ghanaian surfers defy conventions, Au Fil de l’Eau paints the portrait of a country at a crossroads. Through encounters with those driving change: committed entrepreneurs, activists, athletes, and local communities, Au Fil de l’Eau highlights emerging solutions and the dynamics of transformation taking place across the country.
